Preserving the History of the
Stockton Gurdwara

Established in 1912, the Gurdwara in Stockton, California, is the first gurdwara in the United States. The gurdwara has played an important role in South Asian history and has been connected to many well known names and movements, including the Ghadar Party and Congressman Dalip Singh Saund. It also was the center of life for countless migrants, students, and families around the country when they first came to the United States.

As the first Gurdwara in the United States, Stockton Gurdwara is an important institution in Sikh American history as well as general American history. To preserve the importance of Stockton Gurdwara, the Sikh American History Project is working on nominating Stockton Gurdwara as a National Historic Landmark - making it the first Sikh American National Historic Landmark.

We are also working with the community in Stockton to preserve the history of the gurdwara and develop educational materials that tell the over 100 years of history of Sikhs in the region.
